Joan Sebastian, born José Manuel Figueroa, Sr., was a Mexican songwriter and performer known for his contributions to Mexican culture. He began his music career after leaving a seminary at 17, gaining recognition for his compositions performed by various Latin artists. In 1977, he adopted the stage name Joan Sebastian, a nod to San Sebastian, where he had worked. Throughout his successful career, he was involved in various projects, including acting in the Latin series Tú y Yo and being dubbed the King of Jaripeo. Despite being diagnosed with bone cancer in 1999, Sebastian continued to work and received accolades for his music, notably winning awards for his song and album Secreto de Amor in 2000. He passed away in July 2015 at the age of 64.
